about

It's men's responsibility to work to end sexism.

lyrics

Since the second that we're born we're socialized to fill a role
Our identities are forced into a poorly shaped mold
He's so strong She's so sweet It doesn't matter who we are
Who we claim to be or what resides inside our hearts

In the messages we get from media, friends, school and home
Everything in our behavior has a right way and a wrong
How we dress, walk and talk, what we say and how we feel
violently guarded by society Although true none of it's real

So it goes
So we grow

Discouraged to connect on any level that is real
Under the destructive fiction we're so different and opposed
Something that should be beautiful is instead wrapped up in fear
No knowledge of our bodies, our desires full of shame
Interactions with each other solely predicated on
Maintenance of distinction, control, stratification
Or shared identity based only on domination
Everybody gets fucked over by heterosexism

The fucked up attitudes we learn provide the foundation
language and beliefs and insecurities the frame
that support a sexist culture wherein violence is the norm
and it could mean your life to try to opt out of the game
From the confining binary that boxes us all in
to the words we use and jokes we hear when we're just among friends
to silence and tolerance around all forms of abuse
to the conspicuous incidents so easy to denounce

It's all on the same spectrum
All part of the same system
while we operate within it
we create it every day
the fight to overcome it
starts within and never ends

Discouraged to connect on any level that is real
Under the destructive fiction we're so different and opposed
Something that should be beautiful is instead wrapped up in fear
No knowledge of our bodies, our desires full of shame
Interactions with each other solely predicated on
Maintenance of distinction, control, stratification
Or shared identity based only on domination
It's men's responsibility to work to end sexism
