about

In 2003 a good childhood friend of mine was killed in the war in Iraq, during a time that I was involved in anti-war movement. In a nutshell, the grief and rage fucked me up for a good long while and this is just one way I had to express and process it.

lyrics

Dear pfc. K.C.G. of the 82nd airborne,

You know you could have followed in those footsteps of your fathers some other way, you didn’t have to enlist, and I really wish you never had. This war was never yours to fight, but they deceived you into believing that it was for freedom. Not any of this should have ever happened. You should still be here, still young, still alive.
I know its been a long time now since you were killed in the line of what you were sure was your duty and I’ve come to terms with it, for the most part, but it’s never going to be okay.
The troops had always been monsters. Willing Imperial Slaughterers. Smiling faces before the flag. More shipping home every day. Neatly repackaged for their grieving families.
But I knew you as a little kid, a fucking black belt and a kickass friend. So now I can’t write any of them off as inhuman, and now this shit all hits that much more close to home. This is not how I would have chosen to learn this measure of compassion I never even wanted anyway.
One of the last things you ever wrote home, hastily scrawled on some cardboard you found, the fear becoming clearer with each communication were these words.
Just Don’t Forget Me.
Just Don’t Forget Me.
Well Not To Worry.
Don’t You Worry About That, Little Buddy.
